Analog hygrometer are not precise, but give a proximate rough calculation. These hygrometers often require calibration.
To assess the condition of a hygrometer, encase the hygrometer in a moisture-laden cloth. Leave the hygrometer out away from your cigars. A higher level of humidity should be registered in the morning. If the needle has not changed position, the hygrometer is inoperative.
Digital hygrometers are to a greater extent more meticulous than analog hygrometers. A hygrometer may register 35%, but in reality may not be that low.
The following should be verified to substantiate the hygrometer is not functioning:
- Recharge the humidification device recurrently with distilled water.
- Calibrate the hygrometer to read accurately.
- Take out the cigars from the humidor, wipe down the inside of the humidor, let it dry and replicate, then put the cigars back in.
- Press the cigar between the forefinger and thumb lightly. The cigar should not be spongy or solid. This will help resolve if a cigar is going bad.
- In arid weather conditions, an additional humidifier may necessitate being purchased. You can also place a somewhat moistened bit of sponge in your humidor to assist supplementing the humidity.
- Make sure the humidor is in a cool dry place.
